Infrared Therapy: Science-Backed Support or Wellness Hype?

Infrared therapy has quietly moved from elite training rooms into everyday wellness spaces — but does it actually work, or is it just another trend?

Short answer: it works — when used properly.

Infrared therapy uses far-infrared light to gently warm tissues beneath the skin. Unlike surface heat, it penetrates deeper, encouraging blood vessels to dilate. Improved circulation means more oxygen and nutrients reach muscles and joints, while metabolic waste clears more efficiently.

This isn’t entirely new. Infrared light has long been incorporated into acupuncture treatments, often used to warm acupuncture points and surrounding tissue. Studies suggest this combination may enhance local circulation, relax muscles, and improve patient comfort — especially in chronic pain and stiffness cases.

Research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings and Photomedicine and Laser Surgery shows infrared therapy may help reduce muscle soreness, support joint mobility, and promote relaxation through nervous-system calming.

Is it a miracle cure? No.

But as part of a modern recovery routine — alongside movement, hands-on care, and rest — infrared therapy is more than hype.

It’s support. And the science agrees.
